You're right about the 243! I just noticed it; the code obviously doesn't care for the number and simply goes over all possible branches.

What do you mean by "the effects on the rest of the game"? For a given dictionary, of course you can find more optimal solutions, but for "any given dictionary", this should be the optimal way on average, because it optimizes on minimizing the option set each turn.
